Understanding the RAR Format
What is a RAR file?
RAR is a proprietary archive format that supports data compression, error recovery, and file spanning. Unlike ZIP, RAR files require specific software to open. ZipZip provides a modern alternative by bringing the UnRAR algorithm directly into the browser via WebAssembly.
RAR vs RAR5
RAR5 is the latest version of the format, offering better compression ratios and improved security. Many old online tools fail to open RAR5 files, but ZipZip supports all versions, including encrypted headers and multi-part archives (.part1.rar).

How to Unrar Files Locally
To ensure 100% privacy, ZipZip does not work like a standard website. When you "upload" a file, you are actually just giving your browser permission to read that file from your hard drive into its local memory. The data is never transmitted over the internet.
This method is not only safer but also significantly faster for large archives, as you don't have to wait for the upload and download cycles. Once the UnRAR process is complete, you can select specific files to save or extract the entire directory tree.
FAQ - Online RAR Extraction
Can I open .exe (SFX) archives? ▼
Yes, ZipZip can process self-extracting RAR archives. Just rename them to .rar or drag them directly into the tool.
Is there a size limit for RAR files? ▼
The only limit is your device's memory. We have successfully tested archives up to 4GB on modern desktop browsers.
What about multi-volume archives? ▼
Currently, you need to select all parts of the archive (part1, part2...) at once for the tool to link them correctly.
